Blue Zones Project: Transforming Petaluma's Health & Well-Being

Blue Zones is the global leader in the science behind building healthy cultures. An organization rooted in identifying and researching the "blue zones" - regions of the world with the longest-living people - Blue Zones has successfully applied that research to over 75 communities across the U.S.

Healthy Petaluma and a coalition of community partners engaged the internationally-renowned health and longevity experts at Blue Zones to assess and accelerate Petaluma's health and well-being. The effort began with an evidence-based, in-depth assessment of the Petaluma area - with more than 100 community partners participating. Despite trending healthier than the national average, Petaluma displayed room for improvement including higher-than-average rates of alcohol use, cancer, diabetes and depression, among other risks, when compared to benchmark communities.

In fall 2023, Blue Zones Project Petaluma launched its Discovery Phase with a series of Community events to engage, listen and learn from the community about needs in three policy areas: Built Environment, Food Systems, and Alcohol. Additionally, a comprehensive Well-Being Index Survey was deployed by Gallup Research. From all of these efforts, a Blue Zones Blueprint has been developed that will guide the Project's Transformation Phase.
